A retrospective on a standout year
A century of commitment, evolution and professional excellence has shaped the story of our association – and now the anniversary year itself earns its place in that history. After the festive anniversary conference, which brought the industry together in a rare moment of collective energy, the anniversary magazine takes up the baton. It captures a hundred years of association life and invites readers to pause, look back and look ahead.
The issue opens with Nina Gerwoll, former Editor-in-Chief of EXPERT FOCUS, and her piece “The EXPERTsuisse Success Story: Change, Responsibility and Foresight.” In it, she charts the association’s transformation over time, tracing the arc between its early roots and its modern identity. Her contribution sets the tone: reflective, inquisitive and anchored in the idea that progress is always a dialogue between tradition and tomorrow.
This historical thread continues with Madeleine Simonek, former Chair of Swiss and International Tax Law at the University of Zurich, who takes readers through the shifting landscape of Swiss tax law. Her account highlights how legal frameworks, even those grounded in long-standing principles, have been repeatedly reshaped by societal, political and economic developments.
Those wishing to travel even further back will find a compelling deep dive by T. Flemming Ruud, Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, Internal Control & Audit at the University of St. Gallen, and Yasmine Weiser, Dr. oec. HSG and lecturer in Corporate Sustainability at the University of Zurich. Their article, “Ten Thousand Years of Auditing and the Role of EXPERTsuisse,” reveals just how far the profession’s roots extend. It’s a reminder that auditing is as old as civilisation itself – and that EXPERTsuisse stands within a lineage far broader than its hundred-year milestone.
The magazine also brings personal voices to the fore. Prof. emeritus Giorgio Behr, former President of the Chamber of Trustees and of Swiss GAAP FER, offers a first-hand account of pivotal moments that shaped the sector: the introduction of the Limited Audit in Switzerland, the creation of the Audit Oversight Authority (RAB), and the debates and decisions that accompanied them.
Bridging past and present, the magazine features an extended interview led by Stefanie Specker, CEO of EXPERTsuisse, with three presidents of the association. Against the backdrop of the presidential handover from Peter Ritter to Denis Boivin on 20 November – a highlight of the anniversary conference – they discuss their experiences, the challenges of leadership, and their vision for the profession. The conversation gains a unique twist with fictional reflections from Karl Sender, the first president of the association, whose imagined voice adds historical depth and narrative charm to the dialogue.
